On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155mph.It was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932 and caused an estimated $90bn in damage. Although it has been over two years since the date of the event, billions of dollars in insurable losses remain unpaid, while at the same time, insurance premiums have skyrocketed between 40%-300%.
The mismatch of capital between policyholders and the insurance companies has led to a lack of advocacy for claimants, allowing for the proliferation of neglect and unfair play by insurance companies toward policyholders. Victimas de Maria is an advocacy group that seeks to give a voice to claimants of unpaid insurance claims related to Hurricane Maria and pursues resolution of these claims against the largest insurance carriers on the island.
